Disguised Learning through Podcasts

I wanted to venture into something new with my students in the after school program. I decided to try podcasting. I have 12 students and they range in grades from 2nd grade to 5th grade. To be honest my students were less than excited to do podcasts. In fact most of them did not know what a podcast was. The few students who did know what podcasts were, thought they were boring based on what their parents listened to.

We first brainstormed what their personal interests were. Then we started to combine ideas to create segments for our podcasts. I told the students it should be Podcast by Kids for Kids. The podcast challenge was to create podcasts that other kids their age with similar interests would listen to. I had the students write their scripts. Most of the students worked in pairs writing their reviews of movies, games, etc.

Before they realized it they were researching for their podcasts, writing their scripts, peer editing, practicing by using Pages Presenter Mode and eventually recording their podcasts.

With Apple productive apps and having one to one iPads the students were fully engaged and were having fun learning. It was true disguised learning experience.

I was not sure how well they liked it until last Friday, one of my students got picked up early and they were upset because they wanted to stay at school so that they could finish their segment for the podcast.
