It was the "Final Count Down" and the kids were still working on their Apps. They had their basic prototype and then they would upgrade them from 1.0 to 1.5 then 2.0. Finally I had to say what you have is what you have and it is good enough to present to our review panel. We invited parents, all ninety-five 5th graders, Principal, teachers, Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Technology Coach, and Curriculum Director. The homeroom 5th grade Teachers surprised their students and got SWIFT Playground T-shirts too in support of all of their efforts. We set up a table for our judges / review panel to sit at with clipboards, and the rubrics.
The Students were really nervous but they had practiced their presentation and I knew they were ready! We all tried to wear solid black for the presentation since the kids wanted the review panel to focus on the app being displayed and not on them. We setup tripod with iPad to record the presentations and question and answers. The app designs were student council communication system and the other was for bullying.
Each student group presented their App Design. After the presentation we opened it up for the panel of judges to ask questions before they scored the rubric judging sheets. The interaction between the students and the judges was awesome. To hear the students respond with confidence in their app and to quickly answer the questions was sight to see. We gave each student certificate at the end and wrapped up by saying how proud we were to have them complete this project at our school.
