In this STEM Challenge, students created a tower for their friend Harry to look around and see in the classroom. Materials used included: large wooden colored craft sticks, binder clips, wooden clothes pins. Each group had their own assigned color and set of materials in a plastic bag.
Students were first instructed to draw and diagram their possible designs in their iPads. Then the students collaborated and shared ideas as team. Then they decided on the design they were going to build. Often the students combined their ideas creating a whole new design. Then students were given a set time of 20 minutes. They use their iPads as timer. The students also took slow-mo videos to record their work so that we could go back and analyze their design and work habits. Students also took pictures throughout the STEM Challenge.
After completing the STEM Challenge, they measured the structure, and compiled all of their data, videos, pictures, observations, hypothesis, and created a presentation in Keynote, iMovie or Clips sharing what they learned from their STEM Challenge.
My favorite part of this STEM / STEAM Challenge is seeing the students presentations and watching the students learn from one another. At the end of class, the students were bummed that it was time to clean up. They loved the Help Harry STEM Challenge.
